Start Here: The Top 10 RVing Questions Answered
New to RVing? We answer the most common questions about licenses, gas vs diesel, and where you can actually park.
Welcome to the community! If you are confused, you are not alone. Here are the honest answers to the questions everyone asks.
1. Do I need a special license to drive an RV?
Generally Use: NO. In most US states, you can drive any RV under 26,000 lbs (and often heavier) with a standard Driver’s License.
- Exceptions: Texas and California have special “Non-Commercial Class B” requirements for massive rigs (over 26k lbs or 40+ ft). Check your state laws, but for 95% of RVers, you are good to go.
2. Gas or Diesel?
- Gas: Cheaper upfront, cheaper oil changes, better for weekends/short trips. Struggle on steep hills.
- Diesel: Massive torque (great for mountains), exhaust brakes (safer downhill), lasts 300k+ miles. Expensive maintenance (
DEFfluid, oil changes). - Verdict: If you tow heavy (>10k lbs) or cross mountains >4 times a year, get Diesel. Otherwise, Gas is fine.
3. Can I park at Walmart?
Sometimes. It is up to the individual Store Manager.
- Etiquette: Ask permission. Park far away from the entrance. Don’t put out slides or awnings. Buy supplies inside.
- Warning: Many Walmarts in tourist towns (Florida, Moab) strictly ban it. Use apps like AllStays or RVPath to check.
4. How much does it cost per night?
- Boondocking (BLM): Free ($0).
- State Parks: $25 - $45.
- KOA / Private Parks: $60 - $150+.
- Luxury Resorts: $200+.
5. Can I run the A/C on battery?
With standard batteries: No. Air conditioners require massive power. You need a generator or “Shore Power” (plugging in).
- Exception: High-end rigs with 800Ah+ Lithium banks and 3000W inverters can run A/C for 1-4 hours, but it drains the bank fast.
6. What is “Boondocking”?
Camping without hookups (No water, no power, no sewer). You rely on your batteries and water tank. It’s usually free and quieter.
7. Is it safe?
Yes, but be smart.
- Lock your storage bays.
- Don’t flash expensive gear.
- Trust your gut. If a Walmart lot feels sketchy, leave.
8. Can I use the toilet while driving?
Motorhomes: Yes (for passengers). Trailers/5th Wheels: NO. Never ride inside a trailer while it is moving. It is illegal and deadly in a crash.
9. How fast should I drive?
62-65 MPH. RV tires are often speed rated for 75 MPH max. Driving 80 MPH is asking for a blowout. Relax, you’re on vacation.
10. What is the one thing I must buy?
An EMS (Electrical Management System). It protects your rig from bad campground power. It costs $300 and saves you $3,000 in fried electronics.
